INDIA - To Mark Jan 3 As Black Day

 

 India is ashamed as women across the country are mistreated, physically and sexually assaulted on a daily basis. Abnormal rise in crime against women has horrified everyone. After the brutal gang-rape of a 23-year-old paramedical student in a moving bus in national capital, the entire country seems to be saying, "enough is enough". People have hit the streets to protest and demand safety for womenfolk.

 

Protests are continuously going on in New Delhi for last two weeks. Although government did its best to clamp down on the protests by inflicting police brutalities, but agitators are in no mood to end the protests till justice is delivered. 

 

India to mark Jan 3 as Black Day Carrying forward their agitations, protesters have decided to mark January 3 as Kaala Diwas (Black Day). 

 

Brainchild of petticoatjournal.com, an online magazine devoted to women's issues, the day will see protesters condemning atrocities against women. 

 

Spokesperson of the magazine said that they had vowed for long-term community outreach programme on gender sensitisation. "On the day, we will hold a meeting about how to take up sensitisation at the individual level in their neighbourhood," added the spokesperson. 

 

The portal's editor, Shruti Kohli, who was at Jantar Mantar, said: "Whatever is happening here is an immediate reaction to the ghastly rape of the 23-year-old woman. We need to keep the protest alive. Through the journal, and the Kaala Diwas we are going to keep the movement alive." 

 

January 3 was chosen because it is on that day the police would file a charge sheet against the six accused of raping the woman and brutally assaulting her.
